BATON ROUGE - A woman has been accused of going to a homecoming parade after leaving a 93-year-old relative in bed covered in feces and ants.

Alita Hardesty, 43, allegedly left her great-aunt locked up in their one-story brick duplex on the afternoon of Oct. 11. Hardesty was arrested last week and remains in jail.

The older woman was incoherent and covered with feces and ants when found by a relative, said Cpl. Mary Ann Godawa, a police spokeswoman. Hardesty was at the Southern University homecoming parade with her grandson and denied any wrongdoing, an arrest warrant says.

Paramedics took the woman to Baton Rouge General Medical Center, where she was found to have feces under her nails, several insect bites and an irregular heartbeat. She also was dehydrated and demented, the warrant says.

The woman has been discharged from the hospital.
